Kaoru FUJITA, Chiho TAMADA, Yukiko SHINOHARA:Influence of copse management on birds at the Yokohama Nature Sanctuary, Japan.
SUMMARY
Surveys were conducted for 3 breeding seasons and 2 winters on managed and unmanaged copse to measure the effects that management has on the number of birds, bird species and diversity. Throughout the survey, the number of birds was greatest in the managed copse but the number of bird species and diversity was greater in the unmanaged copse. Bird species in the managed area that had only 2 vegetation layers were common birds that are also seen in grasslands and urban areas. Birds in the unmanaged copse with 3 layers included 8 Kanagawa Prefecture red data species. These results showed that copse management in the study areas was not effective in increasing and sustaining birds and that it is advantageous to maintain 3 vegetation layers for the conservation of endangered bird species. Species of bird recorded in particular type of copse is a good indication of the type of vegetation that these species need.

Toshihito TABUCHI:Falco tinnunculus breeding records at Tamagawa Gakuen Campus from 1987-2011
SUMMARY
For 25 years (1987-2011) a study was conducted on colonial breeding Kestrels, chick and fledglings in man-made structures on the southern slope of Tama hills in Kawasaki City, Yokohama City in Kanagawa Prefecture and Machida City in Tokyo with the following results:
1 From 1987 to 2011 in one man-made structure an average of 4 pairs of Kestrels (8 birds) bred. Each year an average of 4-8 fledglings have been observed. In 25 years at least 120 birds have fledged.
2 The man-made structure in this survey is over 30m high and is rectangular. Nests were made in depressions in the shelves of the four corners. It is assumed that the crevices in this structure are similar to holes in cliffs which made for suitable nesting.
3 During the breeding period, the male and female of each pair alternately fed their brood every 2-3 hours. The male was often observed near the nest passing food to the female to feed to the chicks.
4 The majority (70%) of the food fed to the chicks was small birds. Beetles and lizards were 30%.
5 Foraging was in about a 1 km diameter area and mostly carried out within the campus grounds. Some foraging was also in nearby farm field and residential areas.
6 On the average there were 4 pairs of colonial breeding Kestrels in one man-made structure. It is assumed that this structures construction and that there was enough available food for foraging in the area made it suitable for breeding.

Shin-i-chi TOIDA:Effectiveness of deterring Great Cormorant with guns
SUMMARY
Changes in the number of Great Cormorant flying into and out the the roost were studied at the Sagami River in autumn to determine if firing guns was effective in deterring cormorant. Cormorant that use the Sagami River are from the following roosts: Lake Tsukui,Sagami sluice, power line near upper and lower Shonan Ginga bridge, reservoir in Tokyo's Machida City.
Cormorant increase at the Lake Tsuki roost from the begininng of October to the beginning of November,Machida Reservoir roost from the beginning of November to the end of December, and the most were seen at the lower area of Sagami river roost at the beginning of December.
The cormorant dispersed after repeated firing of guns but these birds just dispersed to other roosts, therefore, the overall number of cormorant did not decrease. The ecology and movements of the Great Cormorant need to be further studied to be able to successfully disperse them.

KOMATAN:Study of over-wintering Lapwing and the surrounding environment in Hirastuka City
